Our Story
The Hacienda Heights Seventh-day Adventist Church began as a Branch Sabbath School with three members of the Baldwin Park Seventh-day Adventist Church in 1955 meeting in a mortuary in La Puente. A short time later, while meeting in a women’s clubhouse, the church was formally organized as the La Puente Seventh-day Adventist Church with 48 charter members in 1959. The members were meeting in a Presbyterian Church in La Puente when the Conference purchased land in 1960 to be used for the church. The church was meeting in a Nazarene Church in Hacienda Heights when the original structure (now the fellowship hall), the first stage of a master plan, was constructed in 1962. The membership at that time was about 125.
In about 1965 the church name was changed to the Hacienda Heights Seventh-day Adventist Church. For 23 years the members met in the Fellowship Hall for worship services. In October 1986 with the help of the Mission Church Builders, the church celebrated the completion of the new sanctuary, Sabbath school rooms, and church office.
From the beginning, the church has been multi-cultural; consisting of hard working people with strong ties to people in the community. The church members have always praised the Lord for the blessing of the land and buildings as the property provides a perfect location to serve people in the community. The church has endeavored to use the land and buildings to help meet people’s needs and share the joy and experience of salvation through a relationship with Jesus Christ.
The first mission work the church did for the community was done by the Pathfinder club in 1968 when it collected nonperishable food for the poor. In 1969 the church ministered to the children in the community by conducting vacation Bible school in which 100 children attended; half of them from families who were not originally associated with the church.
The church continues its long tradition of helping the community with their needs. Here are some examples. It conducts Vacation Bible school for the community every summer. Furthermore, Health education is taught through programs like CREATION Health and healthy cooking classes. The Veggie Meals on Wheels ministry prepares and delivers healthy vegetarian meals to those who are unable to provide for themselves. Additionally, the Discover Bible School conducted from this campus helps with the spiritual and Biblical foundation of church members and the community alike. From the beginning, the church has been multi-cultural; consisting of hard working people with strong ties to people in the community.
